The Ground Just Moved Under Us

Building a fashion brand from scratch is hard. Building one that uses 100% natural materials is even harder. Look at the composition labels on most clothes today, and you’ll see why.

Last year, that was the ambition we set for ourselves.

We had EU designers on board. Production was lined up in India. The direction was clear, and the team was working at full speed. Then we hit a wall we had not expected: the design files simply would not open on the machines used by Indian production houses.

What followed was weeks of factory searches, technical troubleshooting, and trying to make two very different production systems speak to each other. Eventually, I had to make a difficult call. Instead of continuing to run against time, we paused the new brand.

It was a disappointing moment for the team.

And then, something unexpected happened.

Our existing brand, Dzukou, received a call from a large retail chain in India. It was a market we had never actively pursued. They wanted customized merchandise for high-footfall locations across the country. The timelines were tight, the locations were remote and beautiful, and the opportunity was very real.

So we said yes.

We redesigned, adapted, and got to work.

With the new brand temporarily on the back burner, we also used the moment to rethink our broader strategy. We began shaping a clearer blueprint for B2B expansion in the EU and the US, along with a planned product line extension.

Young companies rarely move in straight lines. Opportunities do not always arrive through the door you leave open. Sometimes the ground shifts beneath your feet, and you have to find your footing while still moving.

A friend recently asked whether we had pivoted.

We hadn’t.

The ground just moved under us.
