How to Care for a Silk Shawl

In short: A handwoven silk shawl needs very little care. Air it and steam it rather than washing it often. When it does need a wash, hand wash it gently in cold water with soapnuts or a mild detergent, then let it dry flat.

Washing

  • Wash rarely: Eri silk is naturally self-cleaning and needs minimal washing. Airing it out is often enough.
  • Freshen with steam: steaming removes creases and refreshes the fibres without washing.
  • Hand wash in cold water: use soapnuts or a mild detergent and swirl the shawl gently.
  • Do not wring: press the water out with a towel instead of twisting the fabric.

Drying

Lay the shawl flat on a towel and let it dry naturally, away from direct heat.

Storing

Fold the shawl loosely and keep it in a dry, airy place.

Natural dyes

Dzukou's Eri silk shawls are coloured with natural dyes such as turmeric, charcoal and indigo. Because they are handspun and handwoven, small natural variations in colour and texture are part of their character. Gentle washing in cold water helps keep the colours rich.

Common questions

Can I put a silk shawl in the washing machine?

We recommend hand washing in cold water. Eri silk needs minimal washing, and steaming or airing is often enough to refresh it.

What detergent should I use for Eri silk?

Use soapnuts or a mild detergent and cold water.

How do I get creases out of a silk shawl?

Steam it gently. Steaming removes creases and refreshes the fibres without a full wash.
